Hello,

I am sorry to hear you are also dealing with cholinergic urticaria. I also have had this condition for about 7 years on/off.

I have a website, with lots of cholinergic sufferers from around the world. We have a forum where we can give updates and share info about the condition. You may want to check it out.

From what you noted - exercise induced hives - you may not have cholinergic urticaria. There is a diagnosis for people who only have hives, itching, airway issues during exercise alone. It is called exercise induced anaphylaxis, and while the anaphylaxis sounds pretty intense, it may be worth seeing a good allergy/immunologist for a differential diagnosis. I went to one just recently for the same issue(anytime I break a sweat, I break out - I thought I was allergic to my own sweat!). Thank God they didn't think I was crazy. After some allergy testing and a thorough discussion of my signs and symptoms, he determined that I have exercise induced anaphylaxis - which is not the same as cholinergic urticaria. (I had been diagnosed with that before). There are distinct differences and management is different. You may want to see a specialist - I now have to carry an epi-pen (like people allergic to bees and peanuts). I sort of feel stupid, because what am I going to tell someone I go running with? But, its better than the alternative. Hope this helps! Good luck.

I have the same disease. Mine comes on with exercise, and especially if I take a shower immediately after exercise. It also comes on if I eat certain spicy foods (though not all spicy foods. It is really a pain. It started for me in 2003 and has gotten progressively worse. I am kind of a stressed out person, so I wonder if that has anything to do with my development of the disease. Anyway, Loratadine worked well for, although I can't take it now because I am pregnant. It didn't make me tired, and I am very sensitive to medicines. Good luck and let me know if the are any other anti-histimines that work well.

I just recently developed this particular condition...now when I work out I get hives down both arms that last 30 minutes or so. I took a hot bath because my back was sore and had hives from shoulders to calves for 90 minutes and a slightly elevated heart rate. This isn't much fun.

Has anything in particular worked for you? I have been taking Zyrtec in the mornings but it hasn't really helped too much. Benadryl after an attack has worked pretty well and is cheaper...if I take one I don't get drowsy, two knocks me out.

I have the same condition. Can I ask what antihistamine you are taking for this? I am on Allegra and it does nothing, my doc did not try anything else. It is annoying and embarassing to be covered in hives as I try to work out. Thanks!

I felt like laughing and crying for a moment... I am comparable and sometimes really do not understand how someone can reject a hug (I am not a frequent hugger ;-)).

I have suffered from the same condition as well. When I was put on daily allergy meds for an unrelated allergy a few years ago, it was almost completely effective in battling my "exercise allergy." Rarely, I have to supplement with old school antihistamines. It might be worth experimenting with a brand or two to see if you can avoid the drowsy ones.
